Nilgiri tea plantations are represented by the Nilgiri Planters’ Association are headquartered in Coonoor. The vast majority of production is undertaken by small growers, who typically own less than one hectare. These growers typically sell their tea as green leaf to ‘Bought Leaf Factories’. After processing the green leaves are converted into ‘Made Tea’, which is then sold though the auctions in Coonoor, Coimbatore and Kochi. 70% is exported often to be blended. We offer a quality Flowery Orange Pekoe, this full-leaf version, fetches a high price in international auctions, making it unaffordable for most local people. The dark and aromatic flavours of Nilgiri tea make it useful for blending purposes but I think you will agree it makes for a wonderful strong full-bodied brew, with or without milk. Not quite a breakfast tea but definitely elevenses.
